Set in the Rhineland of the middle ages, Giselle is a romantic ballet which tells the story of a poor young woman who falls in love with a nobleman who has disguised himself as a peasant in order to sow a few wild oats. The title role is both technically and dramatically demanding, from Giselle’s early love of the nobleman, to her poignant descent into madness, before a final act of forgiveness ensures freedom from beyond the grave.

Tim Albery’s new production of Tannhauser is a welcome return for the opera after a long absence from the repertory scene. Held captive by the goddess Venus, Tannhauser struggles to break her unholy spell. Finding freedom through his Christian faith, Tannhauser returns to the court he fled after being bested in a singing contest. There Elisabeth awaits him, her heart aching for his return. However, Tannhauser cannot forget the pleasure of Venusburg, forcing him to choose between the feeding of his senses or the nourishment of his soul. Johan Botha, the acclaimed South African tenor, sings the lead role opposite Michaela Schuster as Venus and Eva-Maria Westbroek as Elisabeth.

One of the most famous Christmas operas returns to the Royal Opera House this winter. Hansel und Gretel was first staged in Germany in December 1893, conducted by Richard Strauss, and has been associated with the festive season ever since its earliest performances. Rory Macdonald conducts a wonderful score packed with instantly memorable songs, whilst a charismatic cast bring all the fun of the characters to life. The wicked witch may be a bit scary for younger children, she likes to eat them after all, but the happy ending of this marvellous show is never in doubt.

This famous Italian comic opera is a wonderful mix of music, action, comedy and farce. Count Almaviva is in love with the beautiful Rosina, who is trapped at home by her lecherous guardian, Dr Bartolo. Count Almaviva is determined to win the young woman’s hand, and, with the help of cunning manservant Figaro, attempts to outwit his suspicious rival. Directors Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier are famous for matching perceptive wit to subtle interpretation, creating a wonderful fluid structure for one of Rossini’s most popular and exciting scores.

The Queen’s daughter, the beautiful Pamina, has been captured by her enemy, Sarastro. With a promise that he can marry the princess in return for her rescue, Tamino sets out on a dangerous quest. Mozart’s late great work, Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute), comes vividly to life in an impressive production by David McVicar, with conducting shared by Colin Davis and David Syrus.

Anna Nicole Smith’s life made the news – now this world premiere is set to do too. Born Vickie Lynn Hogan in Houston, Texas, Anna Nicole Smith endured a troubled childhood, marrying at 16 and working as a topless dancer before entering her photos in a contest and making the cover of Playboy magazine. In 1994 she married oil tycoon J Howard Marshall, an octogenarian billionaire who she reportedly met at a gentleman’s club. When Marshall died the following year, a feud with his family over the multi-million dollar estate made tabloid gossip across the world. Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek will star as the former Playboy Playmate. Richard Thomas (Jerry Springer the Opera) has written the libretto for this ambitious and, no doubt, controversial production.
