How Do You Choose a Theatre Seat?

Being stuck behind a pillar or miles from the stage can really spoil the show. But how do you go about choosing where to sit? Here are some top tips to help you find the perfect seat for you:

Do You Know the Theatre Terminology?

The ground level is known as the Stalls. The second level is the Dress Circle (sometimes called the Royal Circle). The third level is the Upper Circle (sometimes called the Grand Circle). The fourth level is the Balcony.

Review the Venue Seating Plan

A good seating plan will show you the layout of a venue and give some information on seats with restricted views, such as those to the rear of the Stalls that may be affected by pillars or an overhang from the Dress Circle above. For those concerned about leg room, the plan will also help you to identify seats at the end of a row, or at the front of a section where there are no seats in front. Our seating plans can be found on the individual show description pages.

Choose How Much You Want to Spend

Where you choose to sit will probably depend on your budget. Choose the price you are willing to pay and then try and work out the best seats in that bracket. The Stalls and Dress Circle are usually the most expensive.

The Stalls are popular because of their close proximity to the actors. The best seats are usually found in the centre, a few rows back, where you can see the full action across the stage. Rear seats that are obstructed by columns or overhang will usually be slightly cheaper to reflect the restriction.

The Dress Circle gives a view of the stage from above, which some people prefer. Seats at the front of the Dress Circle can be highly desirable. Upper Circle and Balcony seats give a steeper view still. Some people may feel insecure sitting at this height, others enjoy looking down on the action. This is where the greater distance from the stage is reflected in lower prices.

If leg room is a real concern, or you really fancy dressing up for the show, you may like to consider a box. Be prepared for a sidelined view, but enjoy the extra kudos and comfort.

Choosing Best Available Seats

When making your online booking, the 'best available' seating option automatically selects the best available seats that are currently vacant in your chosen price bracket.

See What Other Theatregoers Have Said

Take a look at the ‘reviews’ and ‘ask the audience’ sections on the individual show description pages. People often post comments about their experience of the show and the venue. Theatregoers also leave comments on other websites - such as theatremonkey.com - about the best and worst seats they’ve found at different theatres.
