The West End Dress Code

When you visit the theatre do you style-up for the stalls or go casual for comfort? Is there really a dress code for attending a West End show?

There is no formal dress code at any major London theatre. Both smart and casual outfits are acceptable, including trainers, jeans and T-shirts. Of course some productions feel smarter than others, and evening shows tend to be dressier than afternoon matinees. Opening nights are another matter - usually formal suit & tie for a man, posh frock for a woman - but these are special events and if you’re lucky enough to get a ticket you’ll be sure to want to dress to impress!

Some Tips for Comfort

Many of London’s theatres are fine historic buildings. Not all of these venues are air-conditioned in summer, neither are they immune from the odd cold draught in winter. Take something extra to keep warm in colder months, such as a scarf or shawl for ladies. Coats can be left at the cloakroom, please try not to forget them before you leave!

In summary: Jeans and T-shirts are acceptable, but a suit and tie won’t look out of place as many people still like to dress up for an evening show. Whatever your wear, remember, you will be sat in a seat for two hours, so make sure it’s comfortable!
