We say...

Since bursting onto cinema screens in 2000 as a BAFTA Award-winning and Oscar nominated film, Billy Elliot has gone through an amazing journey from celluloid to stage. The themes of family, community and following your dreams have struck a chord with audiences and this production seems to go from strength to strength. Due to the demands of the show three child actors rotate each of the young roles (Billy, Michael and Debbie). Their marvellous performances are central to the musical's success.

All elements of this production, from acting to dancing to staging, are wonderfully blended by director Stephen Daldry. The choreography mixes tap, ballet and modern dance with some show-stopping set pieces, including dancing miners and ballet girls, helped by a simple set of retractable houses, backdrops and a central revolving platform. The show is compassionate and honest in its depiction of unemployed, downtrodden Britain in the mid 1980s. Billy Elliot's inspiring story lingers in the memory long after the curtain has fallen.
