This documentary-style production explores how free speech and censorship have influenced by cultural and religious practices from the 1989 book burnings of Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses to the controversy over the 2005 cartoons of the Islamic prophet Muhammad in a Danish newspaper. The show crosses the boundaries of dance, drama and sound by using archive footage and real-life interviews to create a thought-provoking piece of theatre. Contributors include several high-profile writers, campaigners, religious leaders and politicians. Can We Talk About This? premiered at the Sydney Opera House in August 2011 and comes to the National Theatre, London in the middle of an international tour.
