Classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical starring Lesley Garrett

About Carousel

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical Carousel has been named by New York’s Time magazine as the best musical of the 20th century, and it is not hard to see why.

Full of classic standards such as June is Bustin’ Out All Over, If I Loved You and the timeless anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone, the lively Carousel also deals with issues such as prejudice, social class and domestic violence. When unpredictable carousel barker Billy Bigelow loses his job, he takes his frustration out on his pregnant wife, Julie Jordan. Driven to drastic measures to provide for his child by anger and criminal friends, Billy’s chance to put things right can only be granted by the highest judge of all.

Revived countless times since its first staging in New York in 1945, productions of Carousel have won hundreds of awards internationally and Richard Rodgers even named it as his favourite of all the musicals he had been involved with.

This new production, the second London revival of Carousel, stars diva Lesley Garrett as Nettie and reaches the West End after a successful UK tour (see reviews below). Previews will begin on 21st or 22nd November 2008 and Carousel officially opens at the Savoy on 2nd December.

Few downs as Carousel hits heights (5/5)

RODGERS and Hammerstein very nearly didn't write Carousel. If they hadn't, the audience last night at the Festival Theatre would have been sorely deprived of an outstanding and world-class performance, not to mention an opportunity to enjoy the magnificent voice of Lesley Garrett, worth the price of admission alone.

Lesley Garrett's stunning soprano voice is showcased to wonderful effect as Nettie Fowle in Carousel. As fine as Sheffield's favourite daughter is, she still isn't the star of Rodgers & Hammerstein's classic love story, with the best of their scores, set around an amusement park with a carousel as its centrepiece.

Sweet Julie Jordan (Alexandra Silber) falls for fairground barker Billy Bigelow (an excellent performance from Jeremiah James). Unsure of his feelings for JJ this prompts both to warble If I Loved You. And if that doesn't impress, surely the beautiful You'll Never Walk Alone will have you sniffling. Julie and Billy make a lovely couple, but they're not the stars of this show either.

Billy meets a sad end but gets the chance to go back - just for one day - to correct anything he may wish to. The most moving scene of all sees his now 15-year-old daughter Louise - Lindsey Wise - dancing on the beach. Coupled with special effects so wonderful you can almost feel the sea breeze on your face.

When Enoch Snow and by now Mrs Carrie Snow parade their offspring, the audience are captivated. We have Debbie Fyffe Theatre School to thank for the Snow children and - without opportunity for a full dress rehearsal before opening night - they were the real stars.
Destined for the Savoy Theatre in the Strand, this Carousel will keep turning and turning. Hop on if you can.
