About Dirty Dancing

Read UK Tickets' exclusive interview with Eleanor Bergstein

The appeal of Dirty Dancing has never waned, even after twenty years since it first appeared on cinema screens. The movie’s success resulted in the development of a number of spin-off forms, including a US television series, a still popular music tour, a 2004 sequel and even a video game, but the stage show has surpassed them all.

Written by Eleanor Bergstein, who also wrote the screenplay basing Baby on herself, Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage maintains all the music, action and energy of the film but with the vibrant atmosphere of a live performance.

From the very beginning, the stage show has been a runaway success. First opening in Sydney in November 2004, the show enjoyed a limited run of six months, selling over 200,000 tickets. Other sellout runs followed before Dirty Dancing opened at the Aldwych theatre in October 2006, bringing in the highest pre-sales in London theatre history, with Friday and Saturday performances especially selling out up to six months in advance.

Essentially a faithful live version of the film, Dirty Dancing does not stray far from the structure of the film, although there are a few extra bits written especially for the show. With the film’s soundtrack adapted into larger scale music and dance numbers, the narrative is faster in pace and the buzz is contagious.

If you’ve never seen the film, or you have but you weren’t a fan, Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story On Stage is a vibrant spectacular with an infectious energy that will have you up and dancing with the rest.

If you’re looking to go to a Friday or Saturday performance, check availability first and make sure you book a good few months in advance.

Order your drinks for the interval before the show. The stalls bar at the Aldwych theatre is more like a function room with only one entrance, so it takes quite some time to get in, let alone to join the queue and reach the bar.

Aldwych Theatre

The auditorium is on three tiers: Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle. As can be seen in the seating plan below, the Stalls are split by two aisle running back to front, but only as far forward as row HH. As the Aldwych Theatre stage is not wide, the view from the side sections, created by the aisles, is good. There are no sidelined views in the Stalls. The Dress Circle offers excellent views of the stage. The slip seats to the front and side of the Dress Circle do not directly face the stage, but leaning forward slightly solves the problem. The last row to the rear of the Dress Circle is affected by the overhang of the Upper Circle (row M). Although not obvious in the seating plan, the Upper Circle has a curvature causing some seats towards the rear to be classified as restricted view. The view from the front rows is good, although seats in the first row are affected by a handrail.
