The ENO presents the London premiere of Damon Albarn’s new opera Dr Dee. The production was created by the Blur singer in collaboration with theatre director Rufus Norris, and inspired by comic book author Alan Moore. It played from 1st to 9th July 2011 at the Palace Theatre, Manchester as part of the Manchester International Festival, receiving many excellent reviews during its short run. The libretto examines the colourful life of Dr John Dee, the medical and scientific advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. He was one of the great thinkers of the 16th-century and a man who laid the intellectual foundations of the British Empire. He was ultimately disgraced and ruined after falling under the influence of a shadowy spiritualist. Albarn’s music is an ingenious mix of pop vocals, much of which he will perform live on-stage, with contemporary orchestral music played on period instruments.
