Ghosts

Ibsen’s Ghosts at the Duchess

Iain Glen and Lesley Sharp star in the new Frank McGuinness version of Ibsen’s ‘Ghosts’. Besides directing the show, Iain Glen plays family confidant ‘Pastor Manders’. Lesley Sharp, seen recently in ‘The Rise and Fall of Little Voice’ at the Vaudeville Theatre, takes the role of widower ‘Mrs Alving’.

Widower Mrs Alving prepares to dedicate an orphanage in memory of her late husband. Her son Osvald, a struggling artist, returns home for the opening. Gradually the ghosts of the dead father’s past come back to haunt the present, throwing family life into turmoil and Osvald’s own future into doubt.

Written in 1881 by Norwegian playwright Henrick Ibsen ‘Ghosts’ is a powerful and poignant moral drama. Provocative and sensational, the taboo topics of illegitimacy and congenital disease are publicly laid bare.
