About Hairspray

Big, bold musical starring Brian Conley

Hairspray’s success in London followed rapturous acclaim in New York, where it won eight Tonys and nine Drama Desk awards. In 2007 it was adapted to create the wildly successful movie starring Hollywood legends John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer and Christopher Walken. Hairspray’s success has not been any less impressive since it opened at the Shafetsbury Theatre in October 2007. It swept the 2008 Oliviers and won the Evening Standard Award for Best New Musical.

The hard hitting story of racial segregation and integration in 1960’s Baltimore, told with sensitivity, passion, comedy, fantastic music and spectacular imagery has made the Shaftesbury Theatre's most successful show to date.

Hairspray stars comedian Brian Conley as the big, blonde and beautiful Edna Turnblad.

The earlier you can arrive for this show, the better. The foyer of the Shaftesbury theatre is absolutely tiny and even the queue for ticket collection makes it crowded. The queue for the loos gets really long as well, with theatregoers often having to take their seats before they’ve managed to pay a visit.

Shaftesbury Theatre

As shown in the seating plan below, the theatre is tiered into three levels: Stalls, Royal Circle and Grand Circle. The four rows at the rear of the Stalls are overhung by the Royal Circle (rows U to X). Similarly, the four rows at the rear of the Royal Circle are affected by the overhang from the Grand Circle (rows K to N). The Grand Circle is high and set back somewhat from the action. A handrail at the front of the Grand Circle may affect the view of shorter patrons; otherwise views are unobstructed on this level. The Shaftesbury Theatre has four boxes, views are good, though the seating positions and sightlines are sidelined.
