Tim Minchin's glorious new musical is every bit as good as Roald Dahl's fantastic original children's story. The parents of Matilda Wormwood have no time for their daughter. If they did they would discover that she is incredibly gifted. Unfortunately they see her as nothing but a nuisance and would much rather she kept quiet and out of their way. School should offer a welcome sanctuary, except that monstrous Headteacher Miss Trunchbull rules with a rod of iron by punishing the downtrodden children for the most trivial of reasons. Then, one day, Matilda discovers she has a very special power and decides it's time to get her own back and teach the grown-ups a lesson!

Roald Dahl would be so proud of this production - it really feels like a lot of love and thought went into it. There are some differences to the novel (which is always risky) but they work so well, and really make the stage version stand out. Absolutely love the Alphabet song (showing off Tim Minchin's talents) and Miss Trunchbull is spectacular - for once, I had no desire to "boo" the villain. The show got a thoroughly-deserved standing ovation last night. I hardly ever watch shows twice, but this is a HUGE exception!
