Matthew Bourne’s acclaimed early works receive fresh exposure as part of the New Adventures’ 25th anniversary celebrations. Spitfire ‘an advertising divertissement’ (1988) became something of a signature piece after lampooning the world of men’s underwear advertising within the spectacle of a lavish 19th century ballet. Town and Country (1991) was an Olivier Award-nominated work which explored the notions of national character through the music of some of our finest contemporary composers, including Edward Elgar, Noel Coward and Percy Grainger. The Infernal Gallop (1989) celebrates the ‘entente cordial’ with a tongue-in-cheek view of France in the 1930s and ‘40s, complete with can-can dancing and knowing clichés.
