Noises Off at Novello Theatre, London

Michael Frayn’s Classic Comedy

Noises Off premiered at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1982. It was directed by Michael Blakemore and starred Patricia Routledge, Paul Eddington, and Nicky Henson. After fantastic reviews, the production transferred to the Savoy Theatre where it ran until 1987 with five successive casts. The title is inspired by a theatrical term for sounds heard off stage. The first act is set at the dress rehearsal of a fictional show - Nothing On – and sees the cast fumble with missed cues, fluffed lines and troublesome props. The second act goes backstage on a matinee performance one month later, with relations between the actors rapidly deteriorating. The third act, near to the end of the play’s ten-week run, sees the actors close to the end of their tether, waiting for the final curtain to put them out of their misery.
