About Oliver!

Lionel Bart's classic musical, starring Griff Rhys Jones.

The classic Dickens’s tale of Oliver Twist is transformed by Lionel Bart into a wonderful musical full of comedy, drama, history, villains and Oom Pah Pah. The show tells the story of an orphan, Oliver, who ends up on the streets of Victorian London.

On arrival in the capital he meets the Artful Dodger who shows Oliver the world of Fagin, Bill Sykes and Nancy. Fagin soon trains him to pick pocket his way around the town until, fortunate for Oliver, a wealthy man takes pity. Afraid of what Oliver might reveal about their industry, Fagin and Bill set out to get Oliver back, with tragic consequences.

Oliver! was first staged in the West End in 1960 and was an instant success. Playing at the New Theatre (now the Noel Coward Theatre), Oliver! enjoyed a long run and introduced the British public to little known actors who went on to have enormous success as adults.

Oliver! is loosely based on Charles Dickens’ 1838 novel Oliver Twist. As with many literary adaptations in musical theatre, many changes were made to tie loose ends up more quickly and to make the content more family friendly.

The show has created many classic songs, including, Oom Pah Pah, You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two, As Long As He Needs Me, It’s a Fine Life, Food Glorious Good and Reviewing The Situation.

This production at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane is the second revival to be staged in the West End. A hugely successful production began at the London Palladium in 1994 with Jonathan Pryce as Fagin. The show proved as popular as it had originally and ran at the Palladium for over three years.

This new production has seen stars Jodie Prenger play Nancy and Rowan Atkinson, Omid Djalili and Griff Thys Jones as Fagin. Kerry Ellis, star of Wicked, will take on the role of Nancy in March.

*Please note that Jodie Prenger does not perform on Wednesday evenings. At these performances, the role of Nancy is played by Tamsin Carroll

**Kerry Ellis' first performance will be the 29th March 2010

Jodie Prenger is contracted to appear until Saturday 27 March 2010

Theatre Royal Drury Lane

As shown in the seating plan below the theatre is a large venue spread over four levels: Stalls, Grand Circle, Upper Circle and Balcony. Towards the rear of the Stalls pillars supporting the Grand Circle may affect sightlines from seats on or around the centre aisles (rows Z and ZZ).  Towards the rear of the Upper Circle pillars again restrict views from the aisle seats (rows K and L). The handful of slip seats at the front of the Upper Circle suffer from sideline views. The Balcony offers a birds-eye view of the action, though the view from the front two rows is affected by a handrail (rows A and B), which can be overcome by leaning forward.  There are three levels of boxes available, located between the Grand Circle and Upper Circle. All boxes have sidelined views. For those with limited mobility, row K and C1, C29, D1 & D33 in the Stalls have the most leg room.
