Oliver! reviews from critics, the press and previous bookers.

We say...

A mistreated workhouse boy who runs away from a life of poverty shouldn't really be the basis for a feel-good story, but creator Lionel Bart brings Charles Dickens' Victorian London to life. Oliver! is a tale rich in humour as well as pathos, assisted by a brilliant musical score, with a plucky young hero, a sinister villain and a secret family fortune, the stage is set for some exciting and uplifting, family entertainment.

The 2009 revival of Oliver! is bigger than ever before. From the sheer number of children who light up the workhouse, to the comic and manipulative Fagin and the staggering hydraulic levels of Anthony Ward's Victorian set, Oliver! is a whirlwind of action and imposing musical set-pieces. Comedians from Rowan Atkinson to Griff Rhys Jones have added a touch of celebrity, but it's the fearless children who steal the show.
