In John Guare’s Six Degrees of Separation, conman Paul uses details he extracts from the students he seduces to get close to rich and influential families. Lying about himself and inventing impressive friends and relatives, he is trusted by those he targets. Taking full advantage, Paul uses their homes for sexual encounters, and unashamedly sponges money from them. As he begins to involve his targets in his twisted activities, someone has to pay the ultimate price.
Six Degrees of Separation is loosely based on the infamous conman David Hampton. Hampton duped numerous celebrities and influential people into thinking he was Sidney Poitier’s son or a friend of their children. When Six Degrees of Separation was first staged in 1990, Hampton tried unsuccessfully to sue John Guare for $100 million dollars.
