Barry Wordsworth, Music Director of The Royal Ballet, conducts this richly ranging programme of dance that provides two defining styles of The Royal Ballet. Frederick Ashton’s one-act interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, set to Felix Mendelssohn’s unforgettable music, brings out the contrasts and confusions between the mortal and fairy worlds of Shakespeare’s comic masterpiece. Kenneth MacMillan’s choreography for Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) highlights the transience of life through the moving interactions of the Man, the Woman and the enigmatic Messenger of Death.
