Tom Stoppard’s award winning modern classic The Real Thing comes to The Old Vic this spring starring Toby Stephens. Stoppard, famous for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1966) and Shakespeare in Love (1998), has been named one of the most important dramatic writers of the last century.
The Real Thing was first produced in the London West End in 1982 and the cast included Roger Rees and Felicity Kendal (who subsequently became Stoppard’s second wife). It was a commercial and critical success with a two year sell out stint on Broadway with Glenn Close and Jeremy Irons.
The play focuses upon Henry a successful playwright, who is married to an actress, Charlotte, currently playing the lead in one of his plays. Henry falls in love with another actress, Annie, but will his new love be the real thing? This deeply moving, yet funny and razor sharp drama examines the complex nature of love, art and reality.
