War Horse at The New London Theatre

The National Theatre’s Triumphant Production

Based on Michael Morgurgo’s 1982 children’s novel, War Horse is the story of Joey, a horse belonging to a young boy called Albert, who is sold to the cavalry during the first World War. His adventure sees him fight on both sides before he eventually finds himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, unable and unwilling to forget his beloved horse and too young to join up, sets out on a dangerous mission to find Joey and bring him home.

Adapted for stage by Nick Stafford, War Horse premiered at the National Theatre in October 2007. A sell-out success bolstered by rapturous reviews, every aspect of the production was critically lauded, most notably the unique use of life size puppets created and operated by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company. War Horse returned to the National by popular demand and repeated its triumph in September 2008. Since its West End transfer in 2009 the show has gone from strength to strength. A Broadway version opened in April 2011 and picked up five Tony Awards, including Best Play.

Please note that latecomers will not be admitted into the auditorium until there is a suitable break in the show.

New London Theatre

War Horse plays at the New London Theatre. The theatre consists of only two levels, Stalls and Dress Circle. The Stalls generally have the best views of the stage no matter where you sit. The stage is high; patrons in Row AA would need to look up slightly. Row H, I & J offer the best views in the theatre. Rows O & P can feel far from the stage, but still offer a good view for patrons not wanting to pay full price.

The Dress Circle, one level up in the theatre, has a slight hand rail restriction in rows A & B which can be overcome by leaning forward. Row A does have the benefit of more leg room. Although the Dress Circle offers goods views, most opinions would push towards sitting in the Stalls for view and comfort. Also to be noted, the Dress Circle has a lot of steps leading up to it.
