Whoopi Goldberg Reveals Sister Act Nerves
Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg has revealed how nervous she is about stepping into the role of Mother Superior in the hit musical Sister Act at the London Palladium next week. In an interview with the London Evening Standard, Goldberg talks about how she came to take the role, stepping in almost by accident after finding out that Sheila Hancock was leaving the show: “We found that Sheila was leaving and we needed to find someone really as soon as possible. I said, Let me think and see what I can come up with. Maybe I'll do it',” she said. “Never say anything off the cuff like that, because everyone said, 'OK'. That's how I got the job.” |

Mother Superior Brings a New ChallengeGoldberg famously played the part of singer Deloris Van Cartier in the 1992 film, whilst Maggie Smith shone as Mother Superior. Goldberg spoke about the challenge she faces with the role: “The most intriguing part is how not to imitate Sheila or Maggie. But I'm a different age and a different colour. There may be a little foolishness in my Mother Superior but I'm not going to steal the stage. That's the other thing to keep in my head — that I'm not Deloris.” |
