One Short Day: Wicked Day 2008

Wicked Day 2008
London’s third annual Wicked day on Sunday 26 October promises to be its happiest yet. Wicked Day is a family fun day held in the run up to Halloween in every city where Wicked is playing and is an opportunity to celebrate everything Wicked and help out a local cause too. London’s Wicked Day 2008 in aid of Thrive arrives as the show celebrates its enormous success at home and away.
As Wicked entered its third year, producers announced that business is up week on week from 2007 and has confirmed its sixth booking period, taking orders up to September 2009. A remarkable achievement anyway, but considering the financial climate and the number of shows closing early due to lack of business, Wicked’s success is nothing short of a triumph. London’s Wicked appears to be mirroring the success the show is having in Broadway where celebrates its fifth anniversary with a special reissue of its cast recording.

Elsewhere, the German production of Wicked in Stuttgart will celebrate its first birthday next month, and has been one of Germany’s top three musicals since the week performances began and in December 2007. The Australian show opened in July this year and broke box office records by selling almost 25,000 tickets in just three hours. Despite the tragic death of their Wizard, Rob Guest, Wicked has continued to win thousands of fans at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre. Similar success has been enjoyed by Tokyo production, with no seat going unsold since it opened in June 2007.

So the thousands of fans packing off to Wicked Day all around the world next Sunday really have something to celebrate. Events in London include face painting (green, of course), games and a number of competitions, and this year Covent Garden’s famous Dress Circle shop is getting involved, giving away free copies of original Elphaba Idina Menzel’s single Brave to those dressed as their favourite character from the show and offering 10% discount on its Wicked memorabilia. Fans can also meet members of the cast, who will be on hand to sign autographs and judge competitions. Last year, London’s Wicked Day saw almost a thousand fans filter into Victoria’s Cardinal Place and this year, the event at the Royal Horticultural Halls in Vincent Square promises to be even bigger. As Wicked London enters its third year in triumph, Broadway hits its landmark fifth anniversary and the success of Wicked rockets worldwide Wicked Day 2008 certainly won’t be the last.
