Billy Elliot: Taking over the world

| Despite frequent technical difficulties and cancelled previews, Lee Hall and Elton John’s Billy Elliot has opened to ecstatic reviews at New York’s Imperial Theatre. Last month’s opening night was studded with such stars as Rosie O’Donnell, Kevin Spacey, Woody Allen, Ron Howard, Billie Jean King, Paul Rudd and Ben Stiller and the next day, the critics’ reports were glowing. |
| Cindy Adams of the New York Post was one of the most enthusiastic, saying, ‘It will thrill you, move you and make you cry. It will force you to erupt into a standing ovation in the middle of a performance. Billy Elliot is… the best gift from Britain since Harry Potter.’ Even Ben Brantley of the New York Times, often referred to as the most powerful theatre critic on the planet, gushed about the show, branding it ‘seductive’, ‘smashingly realised’ and’infused with the energy of joy’. Billy Elliot in New York is repeating the unabated success the show is still having in London and Sydney, and the London production recently welcomed two new Billys in Tom Holland and Tanner Pflueger. Billy Elliot is booking until December 2009 and you can get your tickets here. | |
