Kerry back to Defy Gravity tonight

Posted by Jack on Monday 1st December 2008 at 3:14PM

Tonight, Kerry Ellis returns to the London production of Wicked after her triumph on Broadway. Kerry was the world’s first British Elphaba, taking over the role in London from Broadway’s Idina Menzel.

Kerry, whose West End theatre credits have also included Fantine in Les Miserables and originating the role of Meat in We Will Rock You, caused a sensation at New York’s Gershwin Theatre after she began her stint as Elphaba in June this year. For her entire season in New York, Wicked was the highest grossing Broadway show and Kerry found herself holding the top spot on the Actors Hall of Fame’s Top Ten theatre actors.

Kerry takes back her broom from Alexia Khadime, who took Kerry’s place in the western sky at the Apollo Victoria in June. Alexia made her last appearance as Elphaba with an electric and emotionally charged performance on Saturday 29 November.

Kerry Ellis will be playing Elphaba until 2 May 2009, when an extensive cast overhaul is expected. Kendra Kassebaum, who played Glinda at the Gershwin, left the Broadway production at the same time as Kerry last month, and is rumoured to be taking over from Dianne Pilkington as London’s Glinda in May 2009.

Wicked is currently booking until October 2009 and you can get your tickets here.
