Michael Ball: from big hair to big top?

Posted by Kelly on Wednesday 3rd December 2008 at 10:11AM

Hairspray star Michael Ball is said to be in talks with Cameron Mackintosh’s planned production of Barnum. The show is in very early stages of development and is, for the moment, scheduled to open somewhere in the West End in early 2010, so there is still time for Michael to extend his contract with Hairspray one more time.

Michael has already extended twice and has been vocal about how much he is still relishing the role, his longest unbroken run in one show of his entire career. His faultless performance as the big, blonde and beautiful Edna Turnblad also won him his first ever Olivier award in his twenty-year career.

Talks of a revival of Barnum have been circulating for over a year. John Barrowman had initially been given ‘an offer he couldn’t refuse’ to star in the show, but he has because of his busy and varied schedule. The musical Barnum was first staged in London at the Palladium and starred Michael Crawford. The spectacular show, in which the cast display a range of breathtaking circus skills, ran for almost two years and was broadcast by BBC television in the early 1980’s.
Hairspray is booking until October 2009 and Michael Ball is currently contracted until April. Click here for tickets.
