Wicked: the Movie

| Broadway’s original Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth, has hinted in an interview that a big screen adaptation of the worldwide smash hit musical Wicked is currently being developed by Universal Pictures. | |
| A recent update made to the Internet Movie Database by the production company suggests that the movie should be ready for release in July 2010 and, for now at least, Moulin Rouge’s Baz Luhrmann is slated to direct the project. In an interview with Moviehole, Chenoweth has suggested that it could be some years before Wicked hits the world’s cinema screens, as was the case with Chicago and The Phantom of the Opera. She has said that if this is correct, she can ‘definitely’ see herself playing Madame Morrible, although she hopes that it can happen soon enough for her to be able to reprise the role of Glinda. |
| Rumours are currently suggesting that it will indeed be the original Broadway cast, also including Idina Menzel, who will be taking on the leads in the film. A little unimaginative and very unlikely, thinks UK Tickets. Firstly, at 40 and 37 respectively, Chenoweth and Menzel will probably look a little weathered next to all the youngsters at Shiz University. Secondly, we think the movie will stick to the stage production’s successful habit of casting newcomers and turning them into stars. | |
