Surgery forces Atkinson out of Oliver!

Posted by Jack on Friday 3rd April 2009 at 1:05PM

Rowan Atkinson has sustained an indirect inguinal hernia and has had to receive immediate surgery. Doctors have advised Atkinson to take a three weeks off to recuperate. Atkinson had been enjoying a short break with his family, but cut his holiday short when the condition, which Atkinson has been nursing for some time, flared up.

From 13th to 25th April, the role of Fagin will be played by comedian Russ Abbot. Abbot gained critical acclaim in the role during Sam Mendes' Palladium production in 1997. From now until 11th April, the role will be played by understudy Tim Laurenti.

Russ Abbot is best known for his long career as a TV comedian. His many TV shows, including The Russ Abbot Show and Madhouse introduced Britain to such hilarious characters as Basildon Bond and C.U. Jimmy. His extensive theatre credits alongside Oliver! include Doctor Doolittle, My Fair Lady, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Rocky Horror Show.

Please note that no performances will be refunded or exchanged.

Very disappointed that Mr Atkinson will not be playing the part of Fagin when I travel down to our capital next weekend. Having seen Oliver many times, the whole purpose of this expensive visit was to see him amd was worth paying over the odds for tickets (only available as a hotel/theatre ticket package). No disrespect to Russ Abbott, who we have already seen play this part, but once bitten, twice shy - I will never book early again.
