Posted by Roz and Joseph on Thursday 27th August 2009 at 4:13PM

UK Tickets can exclusively reveal that Phil Jupitus will be joining the Hairspray cast in October taking over from Brian Conley.

Edna Turnblad

Juiptus will play Tracey’s mother Edna Turnblad. The role of Edna keeps gaining momentum, with theatre legend Michael Ball having already played the role and funny man Brian Conley, who joined the cast last month, currently performing.

New recruit Phil Juiptus famous for BBC Two’s popular music quiz ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’, will take over the role of Edna after Conley finishes his run in October. Jupitus is no stranger to the stage, having co-written and starred in the play ‘Waiting for Alice’ with Andre Vincent, at the St. Ives Theatre, which also had a run at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The talented performer has presented numerous Radio shows as well as television. As a voice actor he has provided the voice for Dandelion in an ITV adaption of ‘Watership Down’ as well as regularly announcing for the UKTV channel ‘Dave’ during the channel’s evening schedule.
Conley

Conley, currently in the role, is already a household name with credits spanning musical, television, film, comedy and variety. Brian is most famous for his numerous Royal Variety Show appearances and The Brian Conley Show. Theatre credits include Me & My Girl, Jolson and family favourite Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Conley’s new role sees him donning big wigs, padding and colourful outfits. Speaking about his new role “I’ve done a lot in my career, but wearing a dress and heels every night and being married to Nigel Planer weren't things I was expecting to be doing all at the same time, and in front of thousands of people!”

New Sunday Matinee’s

Hairspray began its West End run in 2007 after starting out on Broadway in 2002. The show has won 28 major awards around the globe. From the 2nd November Hairspray will no longer play Monday evenings; instead an additional matinee performance will be added on a Sunday, following the success of other shows adopting a Sunday matinee. The show is currently booking until October 2010; book your Hairspray tickets now!
