Hairspray and Conley Hold Audience Spirits High

| Stepping into Michael Ball’s high heels can’t have been easy but Brian Conley is clearly having a whale of a time playing larger than life mother Edna Turnblad in the sparkling bubblegum musical Hairspray. Monday’s audience gave another standing ovation to the young cast and stage veteran Conley, not to mention Nigel Planer, unrecognisable from his many TV credits as loving husband, easy-going father and eccentric joke shop owner Wilbur Turnblad. | |
![]() | Song and Dance Spectacular The new cast, many making their West End debuts, have really kept the performance fresh. Buoyed by their energy the musical numbers sweep along at breakneck speed. The script remains deceptively intelligent and the witty lines ensure laughs throughout. |
A Marriage Made In Heaven? Conley and Planer have a great rapport as wife and husband Edna and Wilburn Turnblad. Having previously worked together on cult ITV comedy The Grimleys, the two actors clearly bounce off each other.
