This December sees Fagin reviewing the situation once again when actor Griff Rhys Jones will step into the role.

Announced this week by Cameron Mackintosh, Jones will be taking over the role of Fagin from the 14th December until June 2010. The role of Fagin has already been played by Mr. Bean actor Rowan Atkinson for the first 6 months of opening and with Russ Abbott having a small stint early this year. Omid Djalili is currently in the role, receiving rave reviews.

 “I’ve wanted to work with Griff for years so I’m delighted that the marvellous role of ‘Fagin’ has tempted him back to the stage this Christmas. Griff is an actor with an amazing array of successful talents, all of which will undoubtedly be poured into his unique and entertaining interpretation of one of Dickens’ most famous and beloved creations.  I can’t wait!”

Jones became a household name thanks to shows Not The Nine O’Clock News and the Alas Smith and Jones. He has dabbled in theatre, winning a double Olivier Award for his roles in Charley’s Aunt and An Absolute Turkey. Jones has also played Toad at the National Theatres production of Wind In The Willows. The actor is currently enjoying huge success on BBC1’s Rivers With Griff Rhys Jones.
 
Jones will be joined by reality star Jodie Prenger who has extended her role as Nancy until March 2010. Steve Hartley, who starred in the original run of Oliver at the Palladium in the mid 90s, will reprise his role as Bill Sikes.
