Legally Blonde - The Launch

Posted by Joseph on Thursday 1st October 2009 at 2:04PM

Legally Blonde The Musical officially launched yesterday with star Sheridan Smith giving a dazzling performance for the media gathered in Café de Paris in London. UK Tickets very own Joseph Durrant was invited along to get the full lowdown on this exciting new musical.

The Background

Sonia Friedman, producer of the show, told of her passion for the show after seeing it in previews on Broadway, totally in awe of the show she went up to the producers, sat at the back and begged to produce the show when it transferred to the West End. The rest, as they say, is history. Friedman, usually a producer of plays and revivals, is ecstatic to be given the chance to produce a show she loves. “That’s why I’m doing this show. Bottom line, I loved it. It made me happy, it made me smile”

Star of the show Sheridan Smith, picture left with Joseph Durrant from UK Tickets, burst on to the stage to give a taste of some of the songs in the show. One question on everyone’s lips was, can she sing? The answer is yes. Although only having a day of rehearsal time, Smith and the cast delivered a quality 10 minute medley of songs. When complemented on her singing Smith replied “I’m taking lessons.” Smith, like Sonia, fell in love with the show after seeing it on Broadway, as soon as she heard it was transferring to the West End she got her agent on the case.

When asked why people should book the show Smith replied “The show is escapism from the recession, something everyone needs at the moment. It’s pink, fabulous and fun. The cast is great too, I played the CD over and over again, and I never thought I would get the part,”

The Show

Based on the 2001 hit film starring Reese Witherspoon, the story revolves around California popular girl Elle Woods (Smith) who follows her ex-boyfriend Warner to Harvard Law School in an attempt to win him back. Full of tears and laughter along the way.

Alongside smith is boy band star Duncan James (Warner) who is excited to be actually opening a show, something he has always wanted to do after starring in Chicago. Cast also includes Peter Davison (Professor Callahan) famed for his Dr Who role and Jill Halfpenny (Paulette) who is best known as Kate Mitchell in Eastenders and won Strictly Come Dancing in 2004. Susan McFadden, Aoife Mulholland and Alex Gaumond also star.
