Hairspray Welcomes Phill, Belinda and Sharon

Posted by Ben on Thursday 15th October 2009 at 3:21PM

Hairspray hailed the arrival of new cast members Phill Jupitus, Belinda Carlisle and Sharon D Clarke with a meet and greet event at the Teatro Members Bar in London last night. UK Tickets staff were delighted to attend and welcome the new arrivals.

‘Don’t Forget Sundays!’

That was the message from Phill Jupitus to the assembled throng. From 8th November Hairspray will introduce a 3pm Sunday Matinee to give fans an even greater choice when booking those weekend tickets.

Phill’s speech also extended a welcome to Belinda and Sharon. He blamed Belinda for a night spent sleeping rough after her band ‘The Go-Go’s’ played a particularly long gig and mentioned his time on the set of BBC hospital drama 'Casualty' when he played an overweight heart attack patient. A role that the show’s consultant surgeon thought he fitted a little too well!

The evening at the Teatro Bar passed by in a blur. UK Tickets Manager Andrew presented Phill with a Hairspray tee-shirt as the new cast members posed for photographs. Phill also took time out to record a short video on behalf of UK Tickets.

The Show

Welcome to Baltimore 1962 where social change is in the air. ‘The Corny Collins Show’ is taking over the TV airwaves and young hopeful Tracey Turnblad, the big girl with the big hair, dreams of auditioning for a spot as a dancer.  When the show’s cold-hearted producer Velma Von Tussle rejects her Tracey isn’t downbeat. Instead, she joins forces with the Black kids from Special Ed and they fight-back together to overcome their discrimination.

Based on the cult film by John Waters, Hairspray is the story of an outsider with an irrepressible spirit. The musical features a fantastic score and amazing dance routines.

Book Now

Hairspray is playing at the Shaftesbury Theatre. Phill Jupitus, Belinda Carlisle and Sharon D Clarke will join the cast from 26th October. Phill will wear the high heels and ample dresses of Tracey’s mother ‘Edna Turnblad’, Belinda will play glamorous show producer ‘Velma Von Tussle’ and Sharon will be the big voice of ‘Motormouth Maybelle’.
