The Lion King has reported that 2009 was its most successful year at the box office across the musicals ten year West End run.

Hakuna Matata

Timon and Pumba famously sang ‘Hakuna Matata’, which means ‘No worries’ and that is exactly how Disney are feeling about their best theatrical hit in the West End to date.

The production grossed more than £32 million at the box office in 2009, making it the highest- grossing year since the show opened in 1999. The show reported 2009 out grossed 2008 by more than £1.8million.

During the week from December 28 to January 3, The Lion King also broke its own box office record as well as the Lyceum Theatre’s house record, grossing more than £880,000 for the week. The show was seen by 18,757 people across 9 performances.

The Show

The show is produced by Disney Theatrical and is based on the 1994 animated film of the same name.

The show goes back to basics, taking inspiration from a number of different cultures in its music and presentation. Rather than recreating the image of the well-loved Disney characters, the animals are created using giant hollow puppets and costumes that effectively evoke the characters.

With the sweeping score from Elton John and tribal-flavoured incidental music and unique lighting, The Lion King is visually stunning, with twenty-five species of animal, bird, fish and insect vividly represented.
