Avenue Q to Close

Posted by Hannah on Thursday 15th July 2010 at 2:29PM

Outrageous puppet musical Avenue Q has announced it will close on the 30 October 2010. The announcement comes after two other Cameron Mackintosh productions recently posted closing notices, Hair and Oliver!

The Show

The show transferred from Broadway to the Noël Coward theatre in 2006, spending three years until it moved to the Gielgud in 2009 and then to current home the Wyndham’s Theatre.

The show was billed as Sesame Street meets South Park, focusing on college graduate Princeton who arrives on downmarket street Avenue Q. He struggles to discover what he wants to do with his BA in English, until his neighbours, including porn-obsessed Trekkie Monster, former child star Gary Coleman, sexually confused Rod and wannabe teacher Kate Monster, help him find his purpose.

The show features the songs ‘It Sucks To Be Me’, ‘The Internet Is For Porn’ and ‘If You Were Gay’.

Kate Monster Statement

According to a press statement given by Kate Monster “We’ve had a great time, it's been a real ball, but I think we’ve all grown up and got our sights set on living in a more up-market part of town. And Trekkie Monster wants to be somewhere with a better broadband connection.”

The show closes after four and half years and three homes in the West End, there are no plans to transfer to a new theatre.
