Billy Elliot leads the field at 2009 Tonys

Billy Elliot’s phenomenal New York success has been rewarded with an incredible fifteen  nominations at the prestigious Tony Award. Included in those nominations is the title of Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, with the three Broadway Billys, David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish, hoping to win jointly. If they win, Billy Elliot’s performance at the Oliviers in 2005, when the three original London Billys took home the trophy as Best Actor.

Billy Elliot was an immediate hit when it began in New York last year, even as the recession was causing even successful shows to close around it. The phenomenon of Billy, bolstered by national, and even international television coverage, was rewarded with unanimous rave reviews from the notoriously picky New York press, and now leads the field with a remarkable fifteen Tony nominations (the musical Next to Normal follows with eleven).

Previous London hits that have also made appearances in the nominations list this year include Equus, The Norman Conquests and God of Carnage. See below for the full list of nominations for this year's Tony Awards:
