Omid Djalili to succeed Atkinson in July

Producers of Oliver! have announced that Iranian actor and comedian Omid Djalili will be taking over the role of Fagin from Rowan Atkinson in July.

Djalili (pronounced Ja-lee-lee) started his career as an actor, having taken a degree in Theatre Studies at university. His big break, however, came from his stand-up act ‘Short, Fat Kebab Shop Owner’s Son’ at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1995. He has become one of the biggest names in modern British comedy, with his characteristic hyperactive performance style, incredible talent for imitating accents and singing, all of which may be more than useful when tackling the role of Fagin.
As well as stand-up comedy, Djalili has also appeared in a number of films, most notably Piarates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Gladiator, The Mummy, Alien Autopsy, The Calcium Kid and Casanova. He is well known in the US for having played Nasim in the sitcom Whoopi and will appear in 50 Cent’s upcoming video game Blood on the Sand.
Omid Djalili will be making his West End debut playing Fagin in Cameron Mackintosh’s critically acclaimed Oliver! at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane from Monday 20 July 2009. Oliver! is now booking until November and you can get your tickets here.
