| Love Never Dies, the highly anticipated sequel to The Phantom Of The Opera, was announced this week. We won’t have a chance to see the production till March next year, so in anticipation we thought we’d look to the world of film to see what we can expect when big titles, with fanatic audiences, spawn a sequel. |
When Sequels Go Bad
The original was a sell-out success. Lets make another one! Unfortunately, more often than not, sequels fail to live up to the audiences’ high expectations. Here’s a few cautionary tales from the world of film: 1. Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights – No Swayze, no point The first 4 on our list have had great success with the original film around the world, smashing box office records. Since then each has been transformed into a highly successful show on Broadway and the West End. Alas the film sequels did not prove so successful. |
Onwards and Upwards
Lets hope Andrew Lloyd Webber was seeking inspiration for sequel from some of the success stories below. All examples where the sequel has taken the franchise onwards and upwards, and widely recognised as being a better film than the first: 1. High School Musical 2 |
Love Never Dies
| The Phantom Of The Opera has been running in the West End for 23 years and continues to sell out most nights. It has become a true classic of the stage, with productions showing in many cities across the globe. No wonder then, that Andrew Lloyd Webber has decided the time was right to create a sequel. Fans will have to wait till March to see whether he’s been true to the original and created another stage masterpiece that will still be entertaining audiences for another 20 years. |
