Posted by Joseph on Monday 1st March 2010 at 4:41PM

Avenue Q, the cheeky puppet musical is about to enter its 5th year within the West End and to celebrate the show is getting a brand new home and cast.

Wyndhams Theatre

After a successful run at the Gielgud Theatre, Avenue Q “The best musical of the decade” (Sunday Times) will transfer to the Wyndham’s Theatre from the 19th March 2010. It’s been 5 years since the show first exploded onto the West End, originally starting out at the Noel Coward Theatre. The show will also welcome a new cast including Paul Spicer, (Notes from New York, Taboo, Fame) as Princeton/Rod; Jacqueline Tate (Phantom of the Opera) as Christmas Eve and the award-winning Delroy Atkinson (recently starring in Jihad! The Musical) returns to play Gary.

Notable other changes are to the performance times, Friday matinee 5pm and evening 8pm with Saturday matinee at 4:30pm and evening 8pm. Producer Cameron Mackintosh, on the success of the show, comments, “Little did I think when I fell in love with Avenue Q in New York, that it would come to London in one of my theatres.  It is just fabulous that audiences are still hysterical with laughter into our fifth year, with its witty and timely songs being as pertinent as ever.”

The Show

Written by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, Avenue Q has gained a huge cult following with its irreverent humour, light hearted take on controversial issues and its ingenious use of Jim Henson inspired puppets.

Avenue Q tells about the lives of a number of puppets and their human neighbours who live on the street of the title. Avenue Q is geared towards an adult audience, expressing an hilarious take on issues such as racism, unemployment, homosexuality and pornography with memorable and hysterical characters such as graduate Princeton, 'closeted homosexual' Rod, morbidly promiscuous Lucy T Slut and washed up child actor Gary Coleman. Because of the adult content, Avenue Q is very explicit and warns that it contains strong language and 'full puppet nudity'.
