Barrowman stops traffic as Zaza

John Barrowman has been hitting the town to promote his upcoming role in La Cage Aux Folles. From 14 September, Barrowman will be playing the outrageous drag artiste Albin at the Playhouse. Looking disturbingly stunning in a white dress and red wig as Albin's alterego Zaza, he literally stopped traffic in the as he stepped out in the busy West End.

Barrowman will be the fourth actor to play Albin in the current production since it began at the Menier Chocolate Factory in January last year. Douglas Hodge won the Olivier award for Best Actor in a Musical in the role. He was replaced by TV presenter Graham Norton in January this year. The role is currently being played by Roger Allam.

Barrowman is best known for his TV work these days. His Dr Who character Captain Jack Harkness was so popular, he got his own spin off series, Torchwood. His long presenting career has also resulted in his own Saturday night variety show, Tonight’s the Night. He has also been a judge on each of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s TV talent searches. He has also appeared in a number of films and various American soaps.

His career, however, began in musical theatre. He made his professional debut in Anything Goes at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1989. He went on to appear in Beauty and the Beast, Grease and The Phantom of the Opera. He recently reprised the role of Phantom’s Raoul for the concept recording of Lloyd Webber’s hotly anticipated Love Never Dies.

John Barrowman will play Albin in La Cage Aux Folles for limited time, from 4 September to 28 November 2009. Grab your tickets here.
