Posted by Joseph on Thursday 1st April 2010 at 9:52AM

The stunning Billy Elliot the musical last night (31 March) celebrated its 5th birthday, with a star studded audience in attendance.

5th Birthday

Elton John, David Furnish, David Walliams and Lara Stone were among the celebrities that turned out for the anniversary performance. The show, which opened at the Victoria Palace Theatre in 2005, also welcomed back 19 of the 22 actors who have previously played Billy.

Elton, who composed the show's music, said: ''Obviously you want to write the best thing you can… The story was so emotional anyway.'' Elton plans to travel to South Korea where the show opens this August. After the huge success in the West End, Billy Elliot can be seen on Broadway New York and Chicago.

Stephen Daldry, the play's director, told the audience: "When we first started performing this show I really didn't think we'd get through the end of the week."

The Show

Billy Elliot tells the story of the son of a striking Durham coal miner with an incongruous passion for ballet. Billy is faced with prejudice within his own family but is determined to make a career out of his passion. While the show’s themes are family-friendly, there is strong language and a certain amount of stage violence so the recommended age limit is twelve years old.
