Calendar Girls to replace Avenue Q at the Noel Coward
The controversial comedy musical Avenue Q has sadly posted its closing notice after three years at St Martins Lane’s Noel Coward Theatre, with its last performance to be Saturday 28 March 2009. While thousands of fans of this cult hit devastated to see it go, its replacement at the Noel Coward will be the hotly anticipated West End transfer of Chichester Festival Theatre’s summer hit Calendar Girls. With its impressive cast including Lynda Bellingham, Patricia Hodge, Gaynor Faye, Brigit Forsyth, veteran stage actress Sian Phillips, Scottish comedienne Elaine C Smith and Rona from 2 Point 4 Children, Julia Hills, Calendar Girls is the next in what hopes to be a long line of Chichester successes in London. Under the guidance of artistic director Jonathan Church, Chichester has seen its productions of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Six Characters in Search of an Author, The Last Confession and Macbeth achieving triumphant success in the West End, with Macbeth selling out its run at the Gielgud in only a couple of days.
Calendar Girls is directed by Hamish McColl and received ecstatic audience responses and some excellent reviews on its short UK tour this autumn and promises to be a West End smash when performances begin on 4 April 2009.
