The Open Air Theatre production of Crazy for You (which transferred to the Novello Theatre in October 2011 after a successful summer season in Regent’s Park) has posted closing notices and will now play its last performance on Saturday 17th March 2012. The show has received excellent 4 and 5 star reviews but, like previous Novello production Betty Blue Eyes, has apparently failed to attract sufficient audience numbers during its short-lived run. |
Featuring All the Classic Gershwin SongsCrazy for You was first produced in 1992 after Ken Ludwig rewrote the book of the George and Ira Gershwin’s Girl Crazy, changing the location of the story and adding in several songs from the duos back catalogue - including “I Got Rhythm”, “Someone To Watch Over Me”, “Embraceable You” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It”. The show was an instant hit, gaining a Tony Award for Best New Musical on its Broadway debut. Can Mamma Mia! Break the Novello Curse?Open Air Theatre director Timothy Sheader collaborated with choreographer Stephen Mear and designer Peter McKintos to revive the production in 2011. The cast, including Harriet Thorpe, David Burt, Sean Palmer, Clare Foster, Kim Medcalf and Michael McKell, transferred to the West End with the show. The next production scheduled for the Novello Theatre is the magnificent ABBA-inspired musical Mamma Mia!, which is leaving the Prince of Wales Theatre (its home for seven years) at the end of the summer. |
