Critics hail Sister Act
| A star is born Sister Act opened last night to some rave reviews. Both the Telegraph and the Evening Standard gave the show four stars, and others were just as enthusiastic. Robert Billington from the Guardian was harder to please, but on the whole, Sister Act has been praised to high heaven. UK Tickets' Daniella, Alison, Sandra and Andrew were there at the Palladium, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Brian Conley, Sheridan Smith and Whoopi Goldberg. The critics unanimously agreed that the casting was inspired. Newcomer Patina Miller (right) has been described by the national as ‘a star’, ‘terrific’, ‘so amazing’ and ‘worth the admission price alone’. Patina was cast as Deloris after an extensive search by producers and has definitely been worth the effort. As the Evening Standard pointed out, ‘she might have been unknown last night, but today all that will have changed.’ | |
| High praise Sheila Hancock’s appearance was hailed by the Telegraph as a ‘winning performance’. There were plaudits for the supporting cast too as Katie Rowley Jones is described as sweet and Claire Greenway has been called ‘deliciously plump and funny as the over-enthusiastic Sister Mary Patrick’. The changes made in the adaptation have proved even more popular than anticipated. There was praise for the ‘blaxploitation’ aesthetic of Chris Jarman’s villain. Alan Menken, know for his extensive work with Disney, received huge acclaim for his new score. Not one critic mentioned the many songs that helped make the 1992 movie so popular, and the fast-flowing, gospel infused disco beats have proved a hit all round. On their feet Last night’s performance saw the fastest standing ovation UK Tickets has ever seen on an opening night. Sister Act builds up to a rousing climax to the first act, and leaves the audience gagging for more during the interval. Act two sees the momentum snowball so by the time the finale begins, the whole audience is already on its feet. Nobody can resist the show’s vibrant energy and it seems even the harshest critics are no different. Grab your tickets for the fantastic Sister Act here. | |
