David Suchet to Star in Eugene O’Neill Play

David Suchet will return to the West End in 2012 in a revival of Eugene O’Neill's 'Long Day’s Journey into Night' at the Apollo Theatre. Suchet will play patriarch ‘James Tyrone’ in the mesmerising drama about a middle class family whose lives threaten to fall apart during an eventful day and night. The Poirot star was last seen on the London stage in 2010 in another classic American play, Arthur Miller’s 'All My Sons'. The show will be directed by Anthony Page (former Artistic Director of the Royal Court), whose extensive credits include 'Waiting for Godot' on Broadway and 'Design for Living' at The Old Vic. |
A Pulitzer Prize-Winning DramaSet in 1912, 'Long Day’s Journey into Night' tells the story of the Tyrones, a family on the edge of disaster who must come to terms with their own problems before they can help each other. The head of the family is James Tyrone, a 65-year-old actor who has built his reputation with one touring play but is now caught up with financial troubles. His wife, Mary, is a recovering morphine addict who is restless and anxious about the future. Their son, Edmund, has growing health problems and is awaiting a diagnosis of his constant coughing. His sibling, Jamie, worries about their mother relapsing into drug addiction and is angry that the family hid her condition from him. As day turns to night, each person battles their demons, their pasts and one-another as the family drifts ever closer to the abyss. Eugene O'Neill received a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1957 for the play, considered to be one of the finest written in the 20th century. One of England’s Most Respected ActorsDavid Suchet is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Agatha Christie's 'Hercule Poirot', a character he has played for more than 20 years on television. His recent London stage credits include 'All My Sons' at the Apollo Theatre in 2010, 'Complicit' at The Old Vic in 2009 and 'The Last Confession' at the Haymarket Theatre in 2007. He won both the WhatsonStage and Critics’ Circle Awards for Best Actor for All My Sons. He was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s 2011 New Year Honours for services to drama. Long Day’s Journey into Night will play at the Richmond Theatre, South London from 22nd Feb 2012 to 3rd Mar 2012, prior to its West End transfer. The show will run at the Apollo Theatre from 2nd Apr 2012 to 18 Aug 2012. The political comedy Yes, Prime Minister is currently booking at the venue until 17th Sept 2011. |
