The West End transfer of Driving Miss Daisy will begin previews next week on Monday 26th September 2011 at the Wyndham’s Theatre, prior to an official opening night of Wednesday 5th October 2011. James Earl Jones returns to the London stage as chauffeur ‘Hoke Coleburn’ in the all-star production, alongside Vanessa Redgrave and Boyd Gaines, for a limited 12 week season until Saturday 17th December 2011.

The Long and Winding Road

Driving Miss Daisy London Tickets Set in Atlanta, Georgia, in the mid-twentieth century, Driving Miss Daisy tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a white Jewish woman and her black chauffeur. When Miss Daisy’s son Boolie decides she is unfit to drive, he hires a chauffeur to keep his mother on the road. The driver, Hoke Coleburn, is African American, which causes the socially conservative Miss Daisy some misgivings. However, what begins as an uneasy pairing soon blossoms into a life-changing friendship. Alfred Uhry’s play was first staged off-Broadway in 1987 with Dana Ivey and Morgan Freeman in the leading roles.

A Top Grossing Broadway Revival

This new revival of Driving Miss Daisy opened in October 2010 at the John Golden Theater in New York and became The Great White Way’s top-grossing play by mid-January 2011. The show extended its run into April and earned Vanessa Redgrave a Tony Award nomination for her performances as ‘Miss Daisy’. In June, the producers confirmed that the show would move across the Atlantic before the end of the year, with the Broadway cast reprising their roles in London.
