Great Night for Sheridan Smith at Evening Standard Awards

Sheridan Smith in Legally Blonde The 57th London Evening Standard Theatre Awards were held at the weekend with the winners announced at a glamorous ceremony at the Savoy Hotel. Sheridan Smith picked up the Best Actress Prize for her performances in Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, adding to the Olivier and WhatsonStage Awards she won earlier in the year for Legally Blonde the Musical. Johnny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch shared the honour of Best Actor. Although they were nominated separately, the two men shared the title role in Frankenstein at the National Theatre and fittingly received joint recognition on the night. In another joint award, playwright Richard Bean shared the Prize for Best Play with himself for The Heretic at the Royal Court and One Man, Two Guvnors - which opens this week at the Adelphi Theatre.

Look Out for Best Newcomer in 2012

Kyle Soller Elsewhere on the night, Mike Leigh won Best Director for Grief at the National Theatre and Kyle Soller picked up Best Newcomer for his performances in various shows at the Young Vic and Royal Court. He will join David Suchet in the cast of Long Day’s Journey into Night at the Apollo Theatre in April 2012. The Award for Best Musical went to Matilda which opens this week at the Cambridge Theatre. The Award for Best Night Out, voted for by Theatregoers themselves, was received by the hit family musical Wicked.

Best Play: (Joint) Richard Bean - The Heretic (Royal Court) and Richard Bean - One Man, Two Guvnors (Lyttelton Theatre)

Best Director: Mike Leigh - Grief (Cottesloe Theatre)

Best Design: Adam Cork - Anna Christie & King Lear (Donmar Warehouse)

The Charles Wintour Award for Most Promising Playwright:  Penelope Skinner - The Village Bike (Royal Court)

The Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer: Kyle Soller - The Glass Menagerie (Young Vic), Government Inspector (Young Vic) and The Faith Machine (Royal Court)

Editor's Award: Michael Grandage for making the Donmar Warehouse a star

Beyond Theatre award: Pet Shop Boys and Javier de Frutos - The Most Incredible Thing (Sadler's Wells)

The Lebedev Special Award: Kristin Scott Thomas for her contribution to theatre

The Moscow Art Theatre's Golden Seagull: Tom Stoppard for his contribution to Russian theatre and the international stage

The Ned Sherrin Award for Best Musical: Matilda The Musical (RSC Stratford and Cambridge Theatre)

Best Night Out: Wicked (Apollo Victoria Theatre)
