John Barrowman to join La Cage
| John Barrowman announced this week that he has signed to up to join La Cage Aux Folles. The Scottish born actor, presenter, singer and all-round TV nice guy has been rumoured to be taking on the role of Albin for some months, yet speculation was thrown when Roger Allam joined the cast last month. Barrowman, currently on a UK concert tour, announced to his Birmingham audience that he will be playing Albin from 14 September. It is believed that he will remain in the role for a limited period until mid November. Barrowman will be the fourth actor to play Albin since the current production began at the Menier Chocolate Factory in January 2008. Douglas Hodge won enormous critical acclaim (and an Olivier award) for his portrayal of the outrageous drag queen, and stayed with the show when it transferred to the Playhouse in October. In January this year the unusual decision was made to cast TV presenter Graham Norton as Albin. Norton was visibly nervous when he joined the cast at the Palladium for the 2008 Royal Variety Performance, but he made a compelling and believable Albin, even extending his contract by four weeks. Last month, Roger Allam (see UK Tickets’ thoughts) joined and will remain in the role until Barrowman takes over in September. |
| UK Tickets is really looking forward to John Barrowman taking on the role. Not only will his popularity give another boost to a deservedly popular show, his acting and singing abilities are testified by his appearances in such hit TV shows as Doctor Who and Torchwood, as well as numerous recordings, concert appearances and countless musical theatre roles. His witty presenting style, showcased on such TV variety show Tonight’s the Night, and as compere at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 60th birthday party in Hyde Park, also mean he’ll be perfect for the vamping scenes where Albin addresses the audience. All this and Barrowman’s much publicised appreciation for all things camp and theatrical make UK Tickets think he’ll give Douglas Hodge a run for his money. The brilliant La Cage Aux Folles is currently booking at the Playhouse until January 2010 and you can get your tickets here. | |
