Pygmalion star Kara Tointon will return to the West End in the New Year when she appears at The Harold Pinter Theatre in a revival of Alan Ayckbourn’s Absent Friends. The show, directed by in Jeremy Herrin, will open on Thursday 9th February 2012, following previews from Thursday 26th January. Tointon will play ‘Evelyn’ - a young woman who has had an affair with her husband’s friend, creating unbearable tension between the guests at a suburban house party. Reece Shearsmith, the League of Gentlemen member who was recently seen in the musical Betty Blue Eyes, will also return to the London stage in the production. |
An Excruciatingly Uncomfortable ReunionAbsent Friends was the first of Alan Ayckbourn’s fully realised tragic-comedies and is one of his most significant plays from the 1970s. Diana, the well-meaning wife of Paul, arranges a tea party for Colin, a recent widower and a good friend. She hopes to cheer Colin up by inviting his old pals John and Gordon along. Unfortunately Gordon is ill, so his wife Marge comes instead. Evelyn, the wife of John, arrives too. She has recently had an affair with Paul, which creates all manner of sparks as the gathering gets going. When Colin finally arrives the group is close to breaking point - not to mention being completely unsure about how to broach the delicate subject of his fiancée’s awful death! Death and the Maiden, starring Thandie Newton, is currently booking at The Harold Pinter Theatre until Saturday 31st December 2011. |
