Lend Me A Tenor has posted early closing notices at the Gielgud Theatre. The musical comedy, which stars Olivier Award-winning actor Matthew Kelly, was originally booking until 19th November 2011. It will now finish performances on Saturday 6th August 2011. The musical is an adaptation of a 1986 play by Ken Ludwig. It has book and lyrics by Peter Sham; with music by Brad Carroll; and is directed by Ian Talbot, the former Artistic and Managing Director of The Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park. The show won positive reviews after opening at Plymouth's Theatre Royal in September 2010 before transferring to the West End earlier this summer.

An Unforgettable Night at the Opera

Lend Me A Tenor Set in 1934, Lend Me A Tenor tells the story of a renowned opera singer named Tito Merelli, known all over the world as “Il Stupendo”. Things begin to go wrong when, on the eve of performing the most significant role in his stellar career, the great man meets with an unfortunate accident and is unable to take to the stage. Facing ruin, company manager Henry Saunders (Matthew Kelly) instructs his hapless assistant Max (Damian Humbley) to find a stand-in in for the irreplaceable star.

Producers Thank Cast for Dedication

Lend Me A Tenor producers Martin Platt and David Elliot have released a statement explaining the difficult decision to end the production: "We wish to thank the extremely dedicated cast of Lend Me a Tenor The Musical, author Peter Sham and composer Brad Carroll and everyone who has taken part in the project. Despite mostly wonderful notices from the press, great feedback from our audiences and nightly standing ovations, this has not translated into growing sales and we feel it is in everyone's best interests to close the production on August 6th.”
