Les Miserables Film Rumours Heat Up

Could Hugh Jackman and Paul Bettany be set for roles in the Les Misérables film? Pre-production is underway for the screen version of the iconic stage show and Hollywood producers are keen to secure several big names for the leading roles. West End impresario Sir Cameron Mackintosh was initially eager for Alfie Boe to play the heroic character of Jean Valjean – a part he is playing in the original musical at the Queen’s Theatre from 23rd June 2011 – but Boe’s modest international profile makes Hugh Jackman the money men’s popular choice for the film’s starring role. |
Featuring the Star of X-Men and Australia?Jackman would certainly bring a strong combination of stage and screen experience to the project. In 2004 he won several awards, including a Tony Award, Desk Drama Award and Outer Critics Circle Award, for his portrayal of the 1970s singer-songwriter Peter Allen in The Boy from Oz. His other theatre credits include Oklahoma! at the National Theatre (Olivier Award nomination) and Carousel at Carnegie Hall. On screen, he played Wolverine in the highly successful X-Men franchise and starred with Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrmann’s lavish historical romance, Australia. Paul Bettany starred in Stephen Daldry’s West End revival of An Inspector Calls at the Aldwych Theatre. He has also performed extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company in productions such as Richard III, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar. On screen, he has won critical praise in several films including Gangster Number 1, A Knight’s Tale, A Beautiful Mind and Master and Commander. He provided the voice of JARVIS in Iron Man and Iron Man 2. |
An Epic Story of Conflict and LoveLes Misérables is one of the most popular stage musicals ever written. It has been seen by an estimated 60 million people around the world in 42 countries and 21 different languages. There have been 36 cast recordings, including the multi-platinum selling London cast recording, and a Grammy Award-winning Broadway album. Adapted from Victor Hugo’s epic 19th century novel, Les Misérables tells the tale of former prisoner Jean Valjean, who is hounded by a past (in the shape of tenacious law officer Javert) that he cannot leave behind. As the city of Paris descends into violent revolution, the barricades are built and battle for the streets begins. Matt Lucas will be playing Thenardier at the Queens Theatre from 23 June - 10 September 2011 and is scheduled for 8 performances a week. |
