ITV1 and Andrew Lloyd Webber have confirmed that a new reality show to find a performer to play the lead in a national arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar will launch open auditions in the coming months. Following a similar format to Lloyd Webber’s previously successful BBC shows (such as ‘Any Dream Will Do’ and ‘I’d Do Anything’) ‘Superstar’ will be open to both amateurs and professionals with the British public leading the casting process by voting for their favourite contestants. |
An Exciting Talent Search in 2012Auditions are pencilled in for February and March 2012 and will take place in cities across the country, including London, Dublin, Belfast, Manchester, Glasgow and Cardiff. The most promising performers will then be invited back to perform on ITV1 in front of Lloyd Webber and a panel of judges, with the show likely to air in the autumn. The winner will then take centre stage in a major revival of the hit pop-rock musical, beginning at The O2 Arena. Heaven on Their MindsJesus Christ Superstar was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced on the professional stage. It launched on Broadway in October 1971, with the London production opening in August 1972. By the time it closed, after 3,358 performances, it had become the longest-running musical in West End history. The show is based loosely on the New Testament account of Jesus’ life, ending with his crucifixion after Judas’s betrayal. Musical numbers include ‘Everything’s Alright’, ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’ and ‘Superstar’. Find more information about Superstar auditions here: http://www.itv.com/superstar/ |
